“Caring Caps” Support Neonatal ICU Babies Stitch by Stitch
Knitting is a fun hobby for Jaden Barney, and has grown into a creative way for this fifteen-year-old to help the tiniest patients at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. She graciously donated more than 30 knitted caps to the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as a keepsake for the newborn babies who often face complications upon their entrance into the world. “I want to continue to donate to Magee because they are the area’s leader in women and infant care. This isn’t a one time thing,” said Jaden.
Bringing a new life into the world is an incredible journey; however, each year, more than 1,500 babies are admitted to Magee’s NICU. Knowing this is a difficult and trying time for both the babies and their families, the NICU staff allows increased family interaction with their babies and with the nurses and doctors. Keepsake items, like the handmade caps Jaden personally delivered to the NICU’s nurses, provide an extra sense of support and comfort.
To the right: Jaden and her younger sister, McKenna, personally deliver over 30 handmade caps to one of Magee’s NICU nurses, Lynn Cimino. For the newborn babies and their families, Jaden’s knitted caps will serve as a keepsake for years to come.
Previously, Jaden knitted and donated caps to the national program, ‘Caps to the Capital,’ which collected and distributed them to third world countries. When the program ended, Jaden wanted to continue knitting and felt the need to help out and give back. “When the program was over, I had to go out on my own and search for new things to do,” said Jaden. With help from friends and family, Jaden started her own project called ‘Caring Caps.’
Knitting the caps has evolved into a time to bond with friends and family. Jaden’s sister, McKenna, and mother, Mary, are always eager to help. “Knitting for Jaden’s Caring Caps project has taught her and the entire family a lesson of gratitude,” said Mary. “We realize how fortunate we are to have what we have and want to give back.”
Jaden has been knitting since she was ten years old and doesn’t plan on putting the knitting needles down any time soon. “My favorite thing about knitting and donating caps is knowing that it is going to help babies and parents remember a joyous time.”
Jaden and her family are always looking for people interested in knitting caps to comfort Magee’s NICU babies. To help, contact Laura Latini, development associate of Magee-Womens Foundation, at latinil@mail.magee.edu or 412-641-8990.
