4th Annual Freeze Your (Golf) Balls Classic Benefits Breast Cancer Research at Magee
After a frightening diagnosis of breast cancer and three separate bouts with the disease, Terri Henderson stands tall as a six-year cancer survivor thanks to the treatment and care she received at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. To honor Terri’s courage and to have fun with some of his “insane” golfing friends, her husband, Jim, conjured up the Annual Freeze Your (Golf) Balls Classic, with proceeds benefiting breast cancer research at Magee.

The fourth annual golf classic took place December 22, 2009 at the South Hills Country Club in Whitehall, PA. After a hearty lunch and much bundling up, Jim and seven friends took on Mother Nature for a day of golfing fun. Their golfing skills were tested as they braved six inches of snow and temperatures in the 20s. According to Jim, this was better than last year when they played 16 holes while it rained steadily and the temperature hovered just above freezing.
Appropriately, pink golf balls were used to represent breast cancer awareness, and to be more visible in the snow. When the golfers were within a driver’s length from the pin, it was considered in. And when they ran out of pink golf balls, the game was over. Those were just a couple of the fun rules applied during this golf classic.
This year, Jim and his friends played seven holes. “We remarkably did not lose all of our pink (golf) balls,” joked Jim.

The golf classic has raised $425 for breast cancer research at Magee for the past two years. “Terri and I love Magee and the excellent and caring treatment we received from all of the nurses and staff members,” said Jim. “We are especially grateful for Drs. Johnson, Shestak, and Brufsky.”
