In Memory of My Grandchildren
Few things are as devastating as the loss of a child. Some people find solace in helping others. Making a difference in other people’s lives can alleviate the feelings of helplessness that follow a tragic loss.
Robyn and Rich Cunningham lost their twins, Braden and Brionna, in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in January 2008. The Cunninghams managed to pick up the pieces. A year after their loss, they welcomed a son, Carson, to the world.
Before Carson’s birth, Robyn’s mother, Elaine Witowich and Robyn’s two sisters, threw a surprise baby shower. In lieu of shower favors, Elaine made a donation to the NICU in memory of Braden and Brionna. Magee-Womens Foundation recognized Elaine’s generous gift by providing table tents for the shower.
Thanks to Elaine and Robyn's sisters, the shower for her expecting daughter was more than a party. It honored the memory of Elaine’s late grandchildren. It benefited Magee’s NICU. And it educated guests about the advanced care available to the tiniest of patients.
