Soroptimist Continues Support of Breast Cancer Patient Care Fund

“Soroptimist” is a Latin word that means “best for women.” It’s also the name of an international organization for professional women working to improve the lives of other women and girls worldwide. Nearly 100,000 Soroptimists in more than 120 countries and territories contribute their time and financial support to community-based projects benefiting women and girls. Soroptimist International of Pittsburgh is a branch of the powerful women’s organization.

Magee-Womens Foundation would like to recognize Soroptimist for its steadfast support of the Breast Cancer Patient Care Fund at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

Imagine you are undergoing radiation therapy to fight breast cancer. You lose your hair during treatment, but your insurance doesn’t cover the cost of a wig. Your doctor prescribes medications to ensure your recovery, but your insurance doesn’t cover them. Thanks to the Breast Cancer Patient Care Fund, you wouldn’t have to go without. The 32 members of Pittsburgh’s Soroptimist chapter have supported the fund for five years.

“As a 28-year breast cancer survivor, I understand the challenges one must overcome to conquer the devastating disease,” says Sophie Malli, Pittsburgh Soroptimist member. “I was blessed to have health insurance, transportation to and from appointments, and access to great doctors. Many women don’t have these amenities. We hope Soroptimist’s contributions ease women’s journeys while battling breast cancer.”

Soroptimist’s mission aligns with Magee’s. Both are dedicated to doing what’s “best for women.”
