Joan Lamprinakos went to her annual mammogram appointment without hesitation. Then the unthinkable happened. The results from her mammogram indicated breast cancer. In 2006, she was diagnosed with chronic breast cancer and has been battling it every day since.
“I am actually afraid of hospitals in general, but at Magee I have felt comfortable. I’m assuming that is partly because of my lifelong relationship with the hospital. After finding out my diagnosis, a few of my friends who overcame breast cancer at Magee spoke highly of the treatment there, so that was very reassuring - it was one less thing to worry about.”
Joan has had a lifelong partnership with Magee in some shape, way or form – a seven decade-long partnership to be exact.
To the right: Joan and her husband, Nicholas, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in July 2008.
This 70-year bond began on August 29, 1936 when Joan was born at Magee-Womens Hospital. Many years later, in 1960, she had her oldest daughter, Lia, there without any complications. Most recently, her infant grandchildren, James and John, were born at just 27 weeks and recovered in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Magee; James and John are now at home and are healthy. No matter what scenario Joan has faced at Magee, both positive and negative, she has felt like part of a family – the Magee family.
Being part of this family, Joan sought the guidance of breast cancer physician, Adam Brufsky, MD, to care for her cancer. Joan’s breast cancer metastasized and spread to her bones. Joan, knew she could rely on her physician, as Dr. Brufsky has kept her fully informed about her condition and treatment options from the beginning.
Joan and her husband, Nicholas, are getting ready to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in July 2008.
