The College Student Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to participate in basic or clinical scientific research with the goal of interesting students in biomedical research as a potential career.
Since its inception in 1995, approximately 180 students have successfully completed the program. Past students have come from local universities such as Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, and Washington & Jefferson College, as well as from out-of-state institutions such as Kansas University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Notre Dame.
During the 8-week program (40 hours per week), each student has the opportunity to work under the guidance of an investigator(s) at Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI). Students also attend weekly scientific seminars to enhance their knowledge of different aspects of research, especially that relating to women’s and infants' health. In addition, they attend informal lunch meetings where they hear about biomedical science as a career from the perspective of both junior and senior investigators. At the end of the program, students present their findings to other participants as well as to the MWRI faculty and staff at the annual College Student Summer Program Presentation Day.
The start and end dates of the program are flexible and coordinated between the investigator and student. A stipend of $1,500 is available to students on a competitive basis. Housing is not provided.
Current deadline for summer internship: February 1, 2012
